Do you have a creative process?
Want to tap into your creativity?
Need to know how to get started?
Patsy Moore joins us on the Guided Goals Podcast, and we’re going to talk about the creative process. Patsy is a creative multi-hyphenate and frequent maker of small things that customarily explore big ideas. She is the author of Things I’ve Come to Realize in the Past Few Days and host of “The Creation Files” podcast.
Patsy has always been tinkering in different creative endeavors. She had a major record deal in the 90s, but has since released things as an independent. She does small intimate projects, but they take on a big presence.
The Creative Process
Patsy says she used to sit on panels and people would ask her what is her process. Recently, she started writing and hosting a podcast, called The Creation Files. Each week, they examine a small component of creative output. Patsy realized she does have a process, it’s just such a natural way of creating. Patsy explains she is a self-starter who does not need external motivation. She has a flow process, and also does meditation. When you live yourself in that way, she says, everything gives you fodder for your artwork, your writing.
There are many things we do that can be meditative: washing dishes, paying attention to the feel of the dish and sound of the water. You can’t force it.
Everything she has purposely tried to make something cool, it has fallen flat. If you give yourself over to the thing, that’s where the best work comes from.
Be in a position to receive the information, to be a vehicle for the information to get out into the world.
How to Get your Creativity out There
Patsy talks about a conversation she had with a photographer friend about how to see marketing your work as an opportunity to be creative. It is actually a natural extension.
Patsy’s book finally came out last year. She sent copies out to reviewers and friends to get input. One friend took a great photo with the book and sent it to her. And a couple other friends did that too.
These were natural responses. And she thought, “Why can’t this be the marketing?” Sharing photos of people reacting to her book became an unwitting marketing campaign.
We express artistic for two reasons: self-expression. Saying, “I am here.” The other half is we want to connect and have someone saying, “I’m here too.”
Patsy’s Book
On a Monday morning, for no apparent reason, Patsy wrote down three aha moments from the previous week. At the end of the day there was a ridiculous amount of people responded to it, she recalls.
She started posting these on epiphany weeks, and people kept responding, either on social media or privately.
After 4 or 5 months of doing things regularly, people asked her to put them in a few book. Given she was so busy, she opted not to do it at the time. A few months later she decided to split them up into volumes. Things I’ve Come to Realize in the Past Few Days is volume 1.
Work-Life Balance
Patsy says her life is at a place where it’s at that flow state, although her partner in her small production company has a day job. Patsy sees that struggle going on with her – it’s a challenge to carve out the time to pursue your passion, while working full time. (That’s part of what this podcast is for – to motivate and inspire those in pursuit.)
Final Thoughts for Those Struggling to be Creative
The impetus for the podcast was her whole life people who were not artists asked her how to rouse their inner-creative. Many people don’t tap into it because they do not see it as their birthright, Patsy explains.
Our truest beings are being creative.
The first step is to give yourself permission to be creative. Everything starts with your thought life. Tell yourself that you are creative. And realize everything you do is a form of being creative. Embrace it!
